A themed crossword you can play for free
Crossword Stories builds a 15×15 original crossword around a long theme answer. Related vocabulary gives the surrounding clues a shared setting, such as a bakery, a science lab or the night sky. Across and Down entries genuinely cross; every shared letter must satisfy both answers.
The connected, blocked layout is intentionally spacious. It is a theme-led practice crossword, not a claim to reproduce the density, conventions or exact mechanics of an official newspaper grid. The theme explanation shows why the central entry and vocabulary belong together.
How to solve the board
- Read the title and theme note. Treat them as evidence, not as the answer to every clue.
- Select a clue or white square. Confirm its Across or Down direction and count its letters.
- Start with a definition you know. Use those crossing letters to work into the long theme entry.
- Enter letters without spaces. A phrase can occupy one continuous run of squares.
- Check the complete grid. All playable letters must be correct; a filled grid with an error is not a completed puzzle.
Move through a larger grid without losing the clue
Select an entry from Across or Down, or tap an open square. Tap a selected crossing again, press Enter or use Switch direction to inspect the other entry. Previous clue and Next clue move by answer; arrow keys move through open squares and Backspace erases. For a bigger reading target, enable Large cells and scroll within the board.
Check Letter, Word or Grid identifies incorrect entries without supplying a solution. Auto-check provides ongoing feedback; Reveal Letter or Word supplies an answer. These tools mark a result as assisted. A longer grid does not change the one-letter-per-square rule.
A theme can explain more than a list of words
In an original bakery-themed example, “Everyday livelihood, or a slice-and-spread pairing” leads to BREAD AND BUTTER. The entry is written BREADANDBUTTER, fourteen letters without spaces. Words such as FLOUR, YEAST and KNEAD reinforce the bakery setting, while the long answer also uses an idiomatic meaning.
This is a teaching example from our original collection, not today’s official NYT solution. If you need a method for getting from the title to the anchor entry, read the themed crossword strategy guide.
Daily themes and Unlimited exploration
Daily selects the same original board for the date in America/New_York, changing at midnight there. Crossword Stories Unlimited lets you continue with another theme or puzzle from the authored bank. Unlimited has no daily play cap; it does not promise an endlessly growing set of new grids.
Use Practice for a relaxed session. Checks help find mistakes, and reveals supply answers while recording assistance. Progress stays in this browser when local storage is available. Read the result’s help information when comparing attempts.
An independent Special Crossword alternative
The official Bonus Puzzles help page describes Special Crossword as a themed crossword with a monthly release. Crossword Stories is our own game and schedule: it does not provide the official monthly grid, guest-constructor work or paid answers.
For the broader access comparison, see free Bonus Puzzles alternatives. Choose Easy Crossword for direct clues in an 11×11 layout, or Mini Mystery for a compact 5×5 solve.
Themed crossword questions
Does every answer have to be the same length?
No. The long theme entry can be a phrase; surrounding entries have the lengths shown by their squares. Count letters and omit spaces when entering a phrase.
Should I solve the longest clue first?
Only if you have a convincing answer. Shorter, reliable crossings can be a better way into a long phrase than an unsupported guess from the title.
Are there rebus squares with several letters in one cell?
This implementation uses one letter per playable square. Do not import special rules from another crossword unless this game explicitly states them.
Can I play without buying a subscription?
Yes. This site’s original Daily, Unlimited and Practice crosswords are free to play without an account.
