How to follow a trail

Find words related to the clue. Tap neighboring letters, or drag across them, then submit. Letters may connect horizontally, vertically or diagonally and the path can bend. You cannot reuse a cell within a word, and found words do not share cells. Tap the last selected letter again to submit; Undo removes one letter.

Every letter belongs to a theme word. One special word or phrase describes the whole set: its gold trail touches opposite edges of the board. You can find this spanning theme word at any point. If repeated letters offer another spelling route, it is accepted when the remaining words can still cover the board.

Theme hint explains the connection. Trail hint first marks a starting cell, then reveals one word's full path on a second press. Hints mark the score as assisted. Practice is untimed and begins with the theme hint. Daily resets at midnight New York time; Unlimited lets you choose a theme and level.

A free themed word trail, with real bending paths

Color Trails is our original alternative for players looking for a Colorful Strands-style game without a subscription. Use the theme clue to find connected words in a letter grid. Paths can turn and use diagonals; this is different from searching only for straight lines. Every letter belongs to one of the intended theme words, including a spanning theme word that reaches opposite edges.

How to play Color Trails

  1. Read the theme clue before selecting letters. It describes the shared idea behind the target words.
  2. Tap neighboring letters, or drag through them. Each step must touch the previous cell horizontally, vertically or diagonally. You cannot reuse a cell within one word.
  3. Submit the full word. Use undo or clear if a path takes the wrong turn.
  4. Find the spanning theme word and all remaining target words. Found paths stay colored so you can read the remaining board.

A turn can make the word

For example, a teaching grid might place C beside A, with T directly below A. C → A → T is a valid connected path even though it bends. Jumping over a cell would not be valid. The target must also fit the puzzle's theme; a familiar English spelling by itself does not make it one of the answers.

What is the spanning word?

The spanning word or phrase names the board's broader theme and connects opposite boundaries. It may run from left to right or top to bottom and can bend along the way. It is highlighted separately when found. Think of it as the umbrella idea that makes the shorter answers belong together, rather than simply the longest word you can see.

Daily, Unlimited and Practice

Daily selects the same original board for everyone using the date in New York. Unlimited offers repeated boards from the original library with theme and difficulty choices. Practice offers help without the pressure of a timed result. The library is finite; boards can repeat after the available selection is exhausted.

Hints, mistakes and useful next steps

A wrong path does not erase a found word. Clear it and reconsider the theme or the adjacent letters. Hint use is shown as assistance in your result. Your current board is saved in this browser when local storage is available; a challenge link lets a friend play the same puzzle without replacing their Daily record.

Is this the official NYT Colorful Strands?

No. Our boards, theme clues and interface are original. We do not unlock, copy or distribute official subscription puzzles. See the free-alternatives comparison.

Can I connect letters diagonally or turn around?

Diagonal moves and bends are allowed between adjacent cells. A word cannot reuse a selected cell, and a jump across an unselected gap is invalid.

Why was a word not accepted?

Check adjacency, spelling and whether it belongs to the intended theme. Some letter sequences can form another English word without being a target. Read the game feedback, undo the path and use the theme clue to try another route.

What if repeated letters allow more than one route?

The engine checks a candidate path against the remaining theme words so an accepted route does not make the rest of the board impossible. The authored reference paths also remain available for hints and explanations.
