      Controls, checks & saving

Choose a square or a numbered clue. Type letters or use the on-screen keyboard. Tap the selected square again, press Enter, or use “Switch direction” to change Across/Down at a crossing. Arrow keys move through open squares; Backspace erases. Spaces are omitted from multiword answers.

Checks, reveals and Auto-check mark the result as assisted. Reveals fill a correct letter or entry; checks identify incorrect filled squares. Practice has no timer. Daily changes at midnight New York time. Progress is saved in this browser when local storage is available; it is not synced between devices.

These original grids are intentionally sparse, connected blocked crosswords rather than dense newspaper fills. Every open letter belongs to a real numbered Across or Down entry. The collection contains 25 distinct 15×15 grids. Unlimited cycles this finite library; it does not promise newly generated puzzles.

      Every square in its place.

Choose another theme instead of waiting for a release

Crossword Stories Unlimited is for repeat exploration of the original 15×15 themed crossword bank. Each grid combines a long theme answer with related vocabulary in a connected, blocked layout. Use the available theme and puzzle choices to find another setting, then solve its actual Across and Down clues.

No daily cap does not mean infinitely many unique puzzles. The authored collection is finite, and a narrow topic choice can repeat. The objective is a complete, explainable solve—not a promise that every click publishes new content.

Three different ways to practice themed crosswords

      SessionWhat to tryWhat you learn
A familiar topicChoose a subject you know and solve direct clues first. How related vocabulary feeds the long entry.
An unfamiliar topicUse the sure crossings before guessing the theme phrase. How letter evidence can outweigh an appealing but wrong idea.
A relaxed reviewUse Practice, then review any revealed entry’s explanation. The exact definition or idiom behind the answer.

Do not let the title overrule a clue

A bakery setting makes BREAD, FLOUR and YEAST plausible vocabulary. It does not make every food word fit every clue. For “Everyday livelihood, or a slice-and-spread pairing,” the phrase BREAD AND BUTTER answers both parts. Its fourteen letters must still agree with the crossings.

Use a theme as a source of candidates. Use the whole clue, answer length and crossing letters to choose among them. The theme-solving guide includes a practical way to separate these three kinds of evidence.

      Help should teach you something

Check locates an error in entered letters; Reveal supplies an intended answer and is recorded as assistance. Read the explanation before loading another puzzle. A second attempt with fewer reveals can be a more useful practice goal than a faster assisted time.

Unfinished progress is stored in this browser when available. Challenge links identify the chosen grid; they are not a verified public leaderboard or a cloud save.

      Frequently asked questions

Is this a free archive of official Special Crosswords?

No. It is our own original collection. You cannot access official NYT grids, archives or subscription privileges through this game.

Why are there many black squares in a 15×15 grid?

The intentionally spacious blocked layout connects its authored entries without filling every possible square. It is distinct from a dense newspaper-style grid.

Can I choose a theme without creating an account?

Yes. Use the available topic and puzzle choices in the game. Your progress stays local to the browser.
